The course explains the role of the Sentencing Council and how sentencing guidelines are applied in practice to regulatory offences affecting safety, the environment, housing, trading standards, planning and related areas. You will unpack what courts actually look at when passing sentence and how this plays out in real cases involving both individuals and organisations.
You will gain a clearer grasp of the statutory duties on courts, the staged structure of the sentencing exercise, and the impact of key authorities. The course explores how harm, culpability, aggravating and mitigating features, and defendant status feed into sentencing bands and financial penalties, helping you understand what genuinely drives outcomes.
You will also build confidence in contributing to discussions with lawyers about charges, likely sentencing ranges and penalty risks before plea or trial. Through examples and case studies drawn from a range of regulatory frameworks, you will apply the principles to realistic scenarios so that, whether you are leading investigations or working with legal teams, you can engage in sentencing conversations in an informed, decisive and structured way.
